Applications freeze when trying to print

I have an HP Laserjet 4 Plus, with its own network card, set up as a TCP/IP port printer. XP can print to it fine, Vista can print to it fine, Windows 7 RC 64-bit printed to it fine. Now I have finally upgraded to Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, and I cannot print. Test pages print fine, notepad prints fine, but whenever I try to print from anything else I've tested (including XnView (an image editor), Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Openoffice, Adobe Acrobat Reader -- things I commonly want to print from), the program hangs attempting to print. Specifically, I get the usual print dialog, click print, get to the 'Printing pages 1/1' or similar dialog, and then the program just hangs and has to be closed.

Applications freeze when trying to print

Actually Chrome has been strange -- At first, it would appear to print but nothing _actually_ printed -- Now, the print dialog doesn't even come up, the current tab just freezes when you attempt to print a page.

I've tried restarting the spool service, setting the printer to print directly rather than spooling. Nothing works. Sometimes when the programs hang a print job appears, with status 'spooling' or 'printing' depending on if it's set to spool or not -- Nothing can be done to affect these jobs as far as I can tell. Pause and they won't unpause, cancel and they'll say status cancelling but won't go away.

Any idea what could be wrong here?
