PSA / Whataburger to Award $1,000 in Scholarships

Two Senior Athletes to Win $500 Books Scholarship

The Pensacola Sports Association (PSA) is pleased to announce a new partnership with Whataburger restaurants to sponsor the PSA Senior Scholar Athlete Banquet on May 9, 2013.  More than $100,000 in scholarships will be awarded to the overall sports winners.

The annual banquet presented by Sacred Heart Sports Care recognizes over 200 senior athletes from Escambia and Santa Rosa County schools based on their academic performance combined with the student’s athletic skills. It is common for several of the nominees to be a school’s valedictorian or in the top 5% of their respective class.

Whataburger and the PSA are creating a new sponsorship in which they will award one male and one female student-athlete with a $500 scholarship to be used toward their first semester’s book expense.  Additionally, the overall male and female winner at the banquet will win “Whataburger for a Year.”

Beginning on April 1, senior student athletes can visit pensacolasports to fill out the scholarship application form.  The selection committee is looking for individuals who have performed well in the class room, participated in a varsity sport(s), and have contributed to their community through volunteer hours and extracurricular activities and clubs. April 26 is the deadline to submit a scholarship application.

“This is arguably the best event we manage each year,” commented PSA’s Executive Director Ray Palmer.  “Meeting these young men and women and hearing their stories of what they have accomplished makes for an amazing night. Now having Whataburger’s support of this event and add a new scholarship is a big plus to an already great night.”

A majority of the $100K plus scholarships come from event partners University of West Florida and Pensacola State College.  Other scholarships and recognition’s include the a $2,500 scholarship to the Senior Scholar Overall Male and Female provided by the Pensacola Sports Association Foundation, the Gary McAdams Scholarship which is funded by the Pensacola Runners Association and the Admiral Shugart Award, given to an outstanding community leader and contributor, is awarded by WEAR-TV 3’s Dan Shugart in honor of his father.

“We are so thrilled to participate in this year’s event by providing two special scholarships to be awarded that night,” said Lee Cartledge, Director of Operations for Whataburger.  “Giving back to the communities that we call home has always been a focus for Whataburger and we are honored to celebrate the achievements of these amazing young athletes.”

About the Pensacola Sports Association (PSA) – The PSA is one of the oldest sports associations/commissions in the United States, beginning in 1954.  Today the PSA manages or assists in numerous events a year throughout the Escambia, Santa Rosa, and Okaloosa county areas.  Events include a high school all-star series, flag football, 5K-15K runs, marathons, triathlons, bicycle races, collegiate national championships, and annual awards and scholarships banquets to name a few.  The PSA is dedicated to building a better community through sports.
