If you have static on all phones, it could be a problem with the outside equipment, which may be caused by wet conditions - including moisture you can't see. Call 611. (You may have to call from another landline or a cell phone if your phone line is too noisy.)

If you hear static, noise, or crackling on one phone only, then the trouble could be the phone itself, a bad cable, bad filter, or the jack it's plugged into.

These troubleshooting steps may help:

  • Try plugging the phone into a different jack. (To see what jacks look like, go to Google Images: telephone jack .) If there's no noise with the second jack, the first jack is likely the problem. Choose from these options:
    • Replace the jack yourself
    • Hire an electrician
    • Call 611 anytime; charges may apply

    If you subscribe to Home Phone Wire Watch and the problem is due to normal wear and tear, SaskTel will replace the jack free of charge.

  • Try a different phone cable or curly cord. Wiggle the cord during a call to see if it causes static. If wiggling the cord causes static, you'll need to replace the cord. If you rent your phone, visit a SaskTel store or call 611 anytime for a replacement. If you own your phone, you'll need to buy a new cord.
  • If the phone is connected to a splitter or filter, remove the splitter and connect the phone directly into the phone jack or try using a different filter.
  • If nothing has helped reduce the static or noise, it may be the phone causing the trouble. If it's a rental phone, you can get it replaced at no charge. Visit a SaskTel store or calling 611 anytime. For a business customer with a valid warranty or maintenance agreement which covers phone sets, SaskTel will replace the phone.
