How to Change Out-of-Holster Settings for a BlackBerry

Promoted by

BlackBerry OS 10 and Higher

Starting with BlackBerry's OS 10, holster settings only allow users to answer by pulling the phone out of the holster and hang up by putting it back in. To set up these options, tap on the phone icon. Swiping from the top of this screen brings up choices such as the "Settings" icon, which by default looks like a sprocket. Choose "Holster" from the "Settings" menu to bring up the options, which include "Answer a Call By Removing Device From Holster" and "End Call by Putting Device Back in Holster." Setting these options to "On" activates them.

Older BlackBerry Answer/Hang Up Settings

Phones using the older BlackBerry operating system also have automatic answer and hang up capabilities. To activate the options, press the "Send" key, which looks like a green phone. Choose "Menu," then look for the "Options" and "In-call Settings" choices. Selecting "Out of Holster" beside the "Auto Answer Calls" field activates that setting. Hanging up automatically requires the "Into Holster" option beside "Auto End Calls." If either option is set to "Never," the automatic feature is disabled. Under the "Menu" key, select "Save" to keep the changes.

Older BlackBerry Profile Settings

Before BlackBerry OS 10, you could set up profiles so they worked one way when using the holster and another without the holster. For example, you might choose a certain ring tone under the profile setting, but when your phone is in the holster, it vibrates instead. Select the "Profiles" key, then choose "Change Sounds and Alerts." Opening the "Phone Ring Tone" option lets you select choices such as "Play Sound In Holster" or "Play Sound Out of Holster." These options also exist under features such as text messaging and email. Save the changes.

Older BlackBerry Calendar/Task Settings

When choosing the calendar and task notifications in older BlackBerry operating systems, select whether the sound should work when the phone is in or out of the holster. Choose the "Sound" icon, which looks like a speaker. Under the "Select Ring Tones/Alerts" option, pick "Reminders," then "Calendar" or "Tasks." The "Play Sound" field allows you to select the desired option, such as "Out of Holster."
